As we embark on a new year, it’s a perfect time to consider how we can contribute to the well-being of our neighbors here in Weld County. While financial contributions are crucial, not everyone may be in a position to donate money. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to give back, and volunteering is one of the most impactful.
The volunteer dashboard at volunteer.unitedway-weld.org serves as a comprehensive resource, listing opportunities from 83 agencies across the county, including United Way. Whether you have a few hours a week or just a couple of days a year, there’s always something for everyone looking to make a difference year-round.
Volunteer opportunities span a wide range, from remote projects you can do from home to hands-on activities like bimonthly packing shifts at the Covering Weld Diaper Bank or nightly meal service at the Housing Navigation Center’s overnight shelter. You can also assist seniors by providing transportation to essential appointments or help by shoveling driveways for those who are physically unable to do so themselves. There are many options to cater to every interest, age, and schedule.
Another impactful way to contribute is through collection drives. These drives can be organized at your workplace or within your community to directly benefit families, individuals, and children in Weld County. Throughout the year, United Way coordinates these drives to collect essential supplies like warm clothing, hygiene products, diapers, feminine hygiene items, and books. These donations provide our neighbors with the necessities many of us take for granted.
For many in Weld County, these basic items are not easily accessible. Collection drives can profoundly impact their lives, ensuring they have essentials like shampoo, deodorant, gloves, jackets, and clean underwear. These items are available to those who need them at the Housing Navigation Center and overnight shelter.
Volunteering isn’t just about the tangible items donated; it’s about the human connection and the impact on the community. One of our dedicated volunteers at the overnight shelter puts it best, “I think just serving the community is the best part. Treating them with kindness, which they usually don’t get.” Volunteering allows us to directly contribute to our community’s well-being, offering kindness and support that can make a world of difference.
In 2024 alone, volunteers in Weld County contributed an impressive 5,162 hours of their time, collectively saving the community an estimated $187,690 in labor costs. These numbers highlight the immense value of volunteerism and the tangible impact it has on our community’s economic and social fabric.
As we move forward into the new year, I invite you to explore the volunteer opportunities available through United Way and other local organizations. Whether you’re passionate about education, homelessness, senior care, or environmental conservation, there’s a place for you to contribute your time and skills. I promise there is a shift waiting for you!
Together, we can continue to build a stronger, more compassionate Weld County, where every resident has the opportunity to thrive. Let’s make 2025 a year filled with meaningful acts of volunteerism that create lasting positive change in our community.
