Child Development

Child development is how children grow physically, think, learn, communicate, and interact with others over time. Programs and supports are available to help parents and caregivers understand developmental milestones. These resources help families plan ahead and create caring, strong, and healthy relationships.

Local resources

  • Child Find Program for children ages 3 through 5 years old that is part of the public school system in Colorado to identify children suspected of having a delay in development as early as possible

  • Envision Mission to enhance the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Weld County / Offers early intervention and other services
  • Sharing Hunters Voice Works with families with nonverbal children to obtain a speech generating device
  • Respite Care Home away from home for children with developmental disabilities that allows parents the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate
  • Weld County Children with Special Health Care Needs Program for children and youth with special health care needs
  • WHALE Respite Center Serves children of ALL abilities and their families, offering inclusive respite services

  • Colorado Department of Education: Office of Special Education Provides information on special education issues, practices, and resources to families who have children with disabilities
  • Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines Describes the path of children’s learning and development from birth to eight years old
  • Expanding Quality in Infant Toddler Care Initiative (EQIT) Professional training to improve quality of care for infants & toddlers
  • Lantern (formerly Bright by Text) Delivers childhood development resources to parents through an innovative text messaging platform
  • NAEYC Every Child Belongs: Welcoming a Child with a Disability Strategies to support children with disabilities
  • Colorado Department of Early Childhood Resources for parents, caregivers for children prenatal to 12 years of age
  • The PLAYbook Information and activities to prepare children to be successful when entering kindergarten. English, Spanish, Karen, Arabic, Somali
