In partnership with Catholic Charities and the North Colorado Health Alliance, United Way of Weld County’s Housing Navigation Center and Cold Weather Shelter had to find a new temporary location to adhere to social distancing and other Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended preventative conditions. Thanks to the collaborative work, generosity and problem solving commitment of multiple community partners space was secure to provide “Shelter in Place” 24 hour care for 223 homeless men and women over the age of 18.
This solution not only helped assure that these men and women were safe and provided care but it helped reduce the likelihood that they would end up in our hospitals therefore providing for the safety of our entire community. Per CDC guidelines, many of the people served at the shelter are vulnerable to getting a severe case of COVID-19. As such, it was critical to provide sheltering that included 3 daily meals, hygiene/showers and daily check-ins regarding personal health.
A very special thank you to our friends at the City of Greeley for their partnership in responding to this solution and the daily needs of this operation. This work would also would not have been possible without the generous support of churches, businesses, individuals, employee groups, service clubs, book clubs and Weld County who provided meals, snacks, beverages, PPE, homemade masks, clothing, books, puzzles, cleaning and sanitizing supplies, etc.
