About the Emergency Food and Shelter Program
The EFSP was established in 1983 to strengthen the ability of local organizations to respond to crises involving food and shelter. Managed by a National Board chaired by FEMA, the program is supported by national organizations such as the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, and The Salvation Army.
Over the past 40 years, United Way chapters across the country have helped distribute more than $5 billion in EFSP funds to support thousands of human service agencies in communities nationwide.
