Yolanda Chatwood

Position: Kids at Their Best C4 Academy VISTA

Term: August 2018 – August 2019

Hometown: Sparks, Nevada

What do you do?

I am supporting the creating and implementation of a college and career prep program (C4 Academy) across rural Northeast Colorado. We provide in-school services as well as digital to students to help them navigate post-secondary education as a first-generation student, or to help them transition into a career. I have helped hire in-school program workers and am currently working on an app to make our program even more accessible.

Why did you decide to be a VISTA?

I joined VISTA to help others in my community! I have always been a participant in volunteering… When I moved to Greeley to do my doctoral program, volunteering was a large hole in my life. AmeriCorps has given me an opportunity to volunteer in this community and make my heart whole again.

What has been your biggest accomplishment as a VISTA?

Being able to provide college and career prep services to those who might not have had the opportunity without the C4 Academy Program.

What have you learned during your year of service?

That even the smallest programs can still have a large impact in their community.

How has doing national service changed you?

Both of my parents are US Air Force Veterans and showed me what service to our country and the values of America mean. This is my way of doing my part by giving service to my country.

If you could have lunch with three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Eleanor Roosevelt , Princess Diana, & Mother Theresa to have an open discussion of today’s state of affairs and come up with ideas to move forward as a society of acceptance of diversity and inclusion.
