The last two months of 2018 have been memorable ones for Marla DeJohn. The Greeley resident, a longtime donor of United Way of Weld County (UWWC), was blessed with a new grandson in November and won the United Way of Weld County $20,000 car voucher drawing on Thursday.
Five car dealerships in Weld County – Ehrlich Toyota, Ghent Chevrolet Cadillac, Honda of Greeley, John Elway Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram and Weld County Garage Buick GMC – generously donated toward the annual car voucher event.
DeJohn said she’s been donating to United Way all of her adult life. “Many, many years,” said DeJohn, who has been the office manager at Bartels & Company, LLC, CPA’s in Greeley for 14 years. “I believe in the United Way. I believe in their mission and the way they support the community, all of the different people in the community and not just select groups.”
DeJohn, a 1973 Greeley Central graduate, has been a volunteer for UWWC’s Resource Development Council for three years and it’s opened her eyes as to what United Way is all about. “I learned about things that I didn’t know United Way did before like child care, helping parents learn how to be new parents. The cold weather shelter is pretty incredible for our community,” DeJohn said.
DeJohn and 124 other semifinalists were invited to event sponsor DoubleTree by Hilton Greeley at Lincoln Park for the annual drawing. Anyone donating $156 or more to United Way of Weld County was eligible for the drawing with 125 names being drawn over the past several weeks. DeJohn drives a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban with 143,000 miles that needs new shocks and has hail damage. Time for a new vehicle. “I’m thrilled,” DeJohn said. “I want a back-up camera so bad.”
