Greeley resident Daryl Vaas, a retired physical education teacher and coach for the Greeley-Evans School District 6, won the United Way of Weld County $20,000 car voucher incentive at Texas Roadhouse in Greeley on Dec. 21.

Vaas was one of 10 finalists – Sandra Hamman (North Range Behavioral Health), Karen Scopel (City of Greeley), Dr. Charles Lehman (Lehman Legacy Fund), Venessa Snow (Sears Real Estate), Joe Padilla (Atmos Energy), Monica Salazar (Brentwood Middle School), Joan Carvajal (North Colorado Medical Center), Holly Fundermann (Owens-Illinois), Tiffany Wiggett (Professional Finance Company) and Vaas – who advanced to the finals.

The five sponsoring car dealerships this year were: Ehrlich Toyota, Ghent Chevrolet & Cadillac, Honda of Greeley, John Elway Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram and Weld County Garage Buick GMC. Anyone donating $156 or more to UWWC was eligible to win a $20,000 voucher toward the vehicle of their choice from the five car dealers.

Vaas, 74, retired from District 6 in 2001 and has been a Greeley resident since 1970. He taught in the school district for 28 years. Vaas is a longtime donor of United Way of Weld County.”It maximizes my dollars. I can’t use my dollars the way (United Way) can,” said Vaas on why he donates to UWWC. “It’s a win-win situation. Greeley’s been good to me. Lots of former students are now giving back.”

Vaas said he’s going to enjoy the process of picking out a vehicle, and he’s not in any hurry. He has a year to make his selection.

Finalists who placed from fourth to 10th won $50 VISA gift cards, third place (Wiggett) won a $100 VISA gift card, the runner-up (Snow) won a $250 VISA gift card and Vaas won the $20,000 car voucher.
