School Readiness

Preparación para la escuela

blue-eyed-baby-1280x800-1Did you know that 90% of our brain’s growth occurs by age five? That’s why it’s never too early to start helping children prepare to be successful in school. School readiness begins at birth.

In Weld County, 38% of fourth graders are not reading at grade level and 17.5% of high school students do not graduate. These children are not just falling behind once they enter school; they are arriving to kindergarten already behind their peers. There is an average of 2000 days from birth to kindergarten to help children get the best start possible. Research shows us that the right start for a child means more success in school, work, and life. Addressing the needs of the children in our community today will determine our long-term success in reducing the poverty rate and breaking the cycle of generational poverty.

United Way of Weld County’s Promises for Children, is committed to ensuring that all children are valued, health and thriving. Through a suite of direct service programs and initiatives working on early childhood care, health and school readiness, and it is Weld County’s Early Childhood Council. Even though our primary audience is parents and caregivers, our hope is that everyone in Weld County is engaged with the important work of helping children prepare to be successful in school. This includes the medical community, employers, businesses, churches and faith communities, service organizations, family service providers, and nonprofits. Everyone can help to support young children.

Investing in quality early learning programs and school readiness activities is the most efficient way to affect school and life success. Together, Weld County can build a strong foundation to support success in our children that will have a ripple effect of success in the years to come.
