United Way offers free tax preparation
United Way of Weld County, in partnership with Rocky Mountain SER (Service Employment Re-development), Aims Community College, AARP and the Piton Foundation is providing free tax return preparation for individuals or families whose annual household incomes are $49,000 or less. United Way’s 2-1-1 Call Specialists are making appointments for individuals to meet with a volunteer tax advisor.
“This is the sixth year United Way has run this program. The service these volunteers are providing is a great benefit to our community and helps families become self sufficient,” said United Way Executive Director, Jeannine Truswell.
“The tax preparation help is particularly useful to families and individuals who qualify for the earned income tax credit, which is a program signed into law over thirty years ago that makes payments to support the working poor. Helping stabilize families and getting them on the path to financial stability is just one of United Way’s strategies toward creating lasting change in Weld County.”
If tax filers make less than $49,000 and have children at home, the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit can reduce the income tax paid and may even mean a larger refund - as much as $5000 or more.
All returns are processed by IRS certified volunteers and filed online, so filers can receive their refund money quickly, normally in 10 to 12 days. In Greeley there are 2 locations for free tax help: United Way of Weld County and Aims Community College Downtown Campus in the Kress Building. To make an appointment for free tax return preparation, dial 2-1-1 or call 800-559-5590.
2-1-1 and CBS Evening News
The 2-1-1 Information and Referral Program will get a dose of national attention this Friday, March 5th at 6:30pm ET on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. CBS News reporter Seth Doane will deliver a story from the 2-1-1 Call Center in South Bend Indiana focusing on 2-1-1, increased call volume, the “economic crisis” people dialing 2-1-1 are in and how 2-1-1 can assist those in need. In addition, the story will note that many of the clients reaching out to 2-1-1 are asking for social services for the first time. The news story will feature the economic conditions in South Bend, Elkhart and surrounding areas.
According to David Sisk, 2-1-1 Director at the United Way in South Bend Indiana, the CBS crew filmed for almost 2 hours in his Call Center and interviewed his entire staff.
From South Bend CBS traveled to Elkhart and completed a series of interviews with former employees of The Dakota Restaurant, now out of business, to document their life experiences with unemployment, etc.
This story is another example of how 2-1-1 serves as a critical link between people in need and agencies ready to meet those needs.
