| Recreation Grants |
|
For the past 26 years United Way of Weld County has facilitated a Recreation grant initiative to enable children the ability to participate in recreation programs in Weld County. Throughout 2011, low-income individuals in communities with limited resources will be able to play soccer, volleyball, basketball and other recreation activities and receive a scholarship to help offset the registration costs. This year United Way awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarship assistance and this program is estimated to serve close to 1,000 youth in our communities. Three of the participants from last year had previously been in trouble because of vandalism, according to the Recreation Director from the Town of LaSalle. “United Way of Weld County Recreation Program funds were used to enroll all three kids in all of our sports activities this past year. The kids had a blast, made new friends and most importantly they have stayed out of trouble.” This year recreation programs throughout Weld County received the following: Carbon Valley Recreation Center: $1,000 City of Evans Parks & Recreation: $1,500 Town of Eaton Recreation Department: $1,500 Ft. Lupton Parks & Recreation Department: $3,000 City of Greeley Leisure Services: $1,200 Town of Kersey Recreation Department: $1,400 Town of La Salle Recreation Department: $2,100 Town of Mead: $1,200 Town of Platteville Recreation Department: $3,500 Thompson Rivers Parks & Recreation: $2,200 Town of Windsor Parks & Rec. Department: $1,400 With recreation budgets shrinking throughout Weld County, Scott Bailey, who serves on the Recreation Scholarship Funding Committee feels “the United Way Recreation Scholarship Program provides vital funding for people, that otherwise would not be able to afford it, an opportunity to participate in the recreation programs throughout Weld County. It is a great program that helps young children to the elderly.” |
