CHP+ is low-cost health and dental insurance for Colorado’s children 18 or younger. It’s for families that make too much money to join Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance.

Many families have had to or are facing having to cancel their family’s health insurance policies.  Parents may be able to afford their own coverage through their employer, however insurance premiums to cover their children can cost as must as $600 per month. 

These tough times make families really look at choosing paying utility bills, buying food or keeping their children insured.  There is a solution to this dilemma:  Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), a low cost federal and state funded program to provide insurance coverage for children and pregnant women. 

What is it?

CHP+ is low-cost health and dental insurance for Colorado’s children 18 or younger. It’s for families that make too much money to join Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance.

Who Qualifies for CHP+?

Children may qualify if:
☼  They are 18 or younger
☼  They live in Colorado
☼  They don’t qualify for Medicaid
☼  They don’t have other health insurance
☼  Their families meet the CHP+ income limits
☼  They are a U.S. Citizen, a legal permanent U.S. resident for at least 5 years, an asylee or refugee

Are there special services for pregnant women?

A pregnant woman can get health care right away while she waits for her CHP+ application to be processed.  This is called Presumptive Eligibility.  

How Much Does CHP+ Cost?

Depending on your family size and income, you may need to pay an enrollment fee once each year, and co-pays.  Some families pay nothing.  Some families pay up to $35 per year (no matter how many children there are in the family).  Co-pays range from nothing, $2 or $5 for some medical and dental services.  Pregnant women have no co-pays.

Simply dial 2-1-1 and one of the 211 information specialists will connect you with the Promises staff member who can set up an appointment to help you complete the application 
You will need:
  
 ☼  your child’s birth certificate
 ☼  your child’s passport, state I.D. or school I.D.
 ☼  your child’s social security number
 ☼  your last paycheck stub from each job
 ☼  proof of address: utility bill

Promises for Children, Weld County’s Early Childhood Council, recognizes that this program is sometimes a best kept secret that families don’t know about, or think that they make too much money to qualify.  That’s the reason that the Council submitted a grant to The Colorado Health Foundation and was recently awarded $225,000 to assist families in applying for this coverage for the next three years.  The application process can be daunting; however, trained dedicated staff are available to assist you in applying for your family.
